The police in Abuja have recovered 12 stolen cars and arrested 89 suspects for various crimes including murder, armed robbery, one-chance robbery and mobile phone theft.

This was revealed, yesterday, by the command’s Deputy Commissioner in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), DCP Salisu H. Gyadi, while briefing journalists.

He said the pro-active measures put in place by the command to combat crime in the capital city have led to the “smashing of notorious criminal syndicates, arrest of hardened criminals, recovery of dangerous weapons and other exhibits.”

He said items recovered from the suspects, apart from cars include: 43 bottles of codeine, 12 knives, two cutlasses, 14 sticks, various charms, three harmers, 16 cell phones, nine rounds of AK 47 live ammunition and dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

The breakdown of the 89 suspects, said to have been arrested, revealed that 20 are arrested for mobile phone theft, 14 for armed robbery and another 10 for car snatching, while four were arrested for alleged motorcycle snatching and two allegedly for stealing cars from where their owners packed them.

Others are six suspected drug peddlers; 21 suspects allegedly with various exhibits during a raid;  five one-chance robbers and two suspects who allegedly received stolen items. Three suspects were arrested over an armed robbery that led to the death of an individual while two others were arrested allegedly with firearms.

Explaining the case of the three arrested for armed robbery/murder, the deputy commissioner boss said one of the suspects, 25-year-old Aminu Bello, a commercial tricycle operator picked a female passenger to CITEC area of Life Camp from Gwarimpa on March 25 around 9:30pm.

“He then stopped around First Avenue, picked Sani Abubakar, 25; Rabiu Labaran, 26 and Musbau (surname unknown and is presently at large), whom the said Aminu Bello claimed were his friends.

He said the lady was robbed by Abubakar when she alighted.

“On lookers gave them a chase, caught up with them at Kado by Diamond Bank and one Ahmadu Zaria, a good Samaritan, tried to hold the said Sani Abubakar, who stabbed him, he said, adding that the victim was however confirmed dead at Asokoro General Hospital.

“Policemen who intervened during the incident rounded up all the suspects except for Musbau, who managed to escape by mixing into the crowd,” he said.
