Abuja residents have commended the Federal Government’s intervention in the agricultural sector, noting that the recent crash in food prices has brought significant relief to households in the Federal Capital Territory and across the nation.

The residents gave this commendation in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday.

Mrs. Vivian Uche, a foodstuff vendor at Lugbe Market, praised the government’s efforts, stating that the intervention has been instrumental in curbing the hike in food prices.

“In an unexpected development, food prices have dropped in markets across Nigeria, bringing much relief to citizens who have been struggling with the rising cost of living.

“I sell beans, rice, and other staples, and the prices have dropped notably. A bag of rice that was selling for N76,000 a few months ago now goes for N55,000.”

“The same trend applies to yam flour and other items. Truly speaking, this is a relief for both us traders and the customers who buy our products,” she added.

Mrs. Ifeoma Iwuji, a civil servant, remarked that the government’s efforts to make food more available and affordable cannot be overemphasized.

According to her, the implementation of strategic policies has increased food supply, leading to a surplus that has subsequently lowered prices.

“The cost of food has been a major burden. With prices dropping, we can now afford to buy more for our families,” she said.

However, some residents remain cautious. Mrs. Cynthia Chukwuma, a shopper at Lugbe Market, while appreciative of the current trend, urged the government to ensure the prices remain stable.

“What the Federal Government did was good, but sustainability is key. We have seen prices drop before, only for them to skyrocket again. For now, families are enjoying the benefits, but we need to see this maintained over the long term,” Chukwuma noted.

Mr. Kayode Iyiola, a mechanized farmer, told NAN that the price drop is a result of a combination of federal intervention and other seasonal factors.

He noted that the government’s support for farmers has played a vital role in stabilizing the market. (NAN)
