FCT Transportation Secretary, Engr. Jonathan Achara Ivoke, who revealed this to media men in Abuja, said the Abuja master plan has made provision for a network of six corridors.
He said that in 2006 design and feasibility and studies started for three corridors which are Lots 1,2 and 3. Corridor Lot 1 is connecting Garki through Wuse, Gwarinpa to Kubwa.
Ivoke said Corridor 2 is connecting Garki through Asokoro to Nyanya then Corridor 3 is connecting Wuse specifically around the NNPC Mega Station along Olusegun Obasanjo Way through Idu to the Airport.
The Secretary said the corridors not under construction are Corridor 4 which is connecting Kuje to Gwgwalada, Corridor 5 connecting extensions to Bwari and Corridor 6 connecting to Kwali.
He said in 2007 construction contract was awarded for Corridor 1 and 3 and work actually started by 2009 but because of the alteration of design Corridor 1(a) came on stream but assured that both Corridor 1 (a) and Corridor 3 are expected to be completed in 2015.
Engr. Ivoke said there 15 stations between Corridor 1 (a) and 3 will terminate at the Abuja main station located near the NNPC Mega Station which will form the hub of the rail transportation system in the city.
He said financing of the light rail project was conceived on procuring a Chinese EXIM soft loan of $500 million but there was problem in accessing the said loan but the FCT minister completed the arrangement and by December 2012 the loan was received.
He said the FCT Administration and the federal government will on its part spend $323 million hence the smooth flow of work on the project.
