How could First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, at this point in time when there is convergence of efforts to secure the release of the abducted girls of Chibok, be making her own demands that someone else, not her husband, should take responsibility for the mess? It is lacking any logical basis for her to demand that the first lady of Borno State should produce the missing girls. The first lady deserves to be roundly condemned for taking such unhelpful stance at a meeting she called on the matter last Sunday.
Mrs Jonathan should have started the meeting by telling the world what her husband has been doing to secure the release of the girls.
She summoned a stakeholders’ meeting in the comfort and security of her house with the full cast of her apologists very likely playing a pre-planned script and intimidating the invitees.
The first lady has arrogated powers to herself to invite people’s wives, other workers and governors’ wives to attend another meeting on Sunday, and a committee appointed to ensure that they must attend. So she has the power of the legislature to subpoena people? Wife of the Chief of Chibok, invited along with the gateman, teachers, parents, wife of the local government chairman, etc, are people that can be intimidated easily. Surprisingly, she forgot to invite the wives of service chiefs, and the wife of the DG DSS, all of whose husbands are major stakeholders in security matters. Madam only invited those she can intimidate and have her way with.
But seriously, for the first lady to get more information, she should hold such meeting in Maiduguri or Chibok where she will see things for herself firsthand and talk to all those involved; people who will freely bare their minds. She should not cocoon herself in the comfort of Aso Rock amongst friends and be saying things that are out of context and jarring to the national mood.
The first lady’s request that Borno governor must produce the abducted girls is misdirected and inappropriate; that request should be made of her husband who is the commander in chief.
She should also stop this nascent Abujawood movie in which she has cast herself in the lead role, and do her fact finding privately then advice her husband accordingly as we the general public do not want to be fed with annoying episode that cannot in any way help with freedom for the girls.
