The Awele Creative Trust, set up by Nigerian author and winner of the NNLG Prize for Literature Chika Unigwe has instituted a short story prize for young writers.

The initiative aimed at setting up a writers’ residence in Nigeria said in a statement on its site that “while  waiting to raise enough funds to build the Writers Centre, the board is pleased to announce an annual award: the Awele Creative Trust Writing Award. The ACT Award is open to every unpublished writer living in Nigeria (regardless of nationality) between the ages of 19 and 26.
The winner of the inaugural award will be announced in January 2015.”
To be eligible, for the N50, 000 prize, the work, which must be between 2, 500 and 5, 000 words,  must not have been published before. The work must be fictional and only one entry is allowed per author.
The prize administrators also require a cover note with the name, date of birth, e-mail address and telephone number of the author.
Entries will open between September 1 and November 1 so aspiring entrants have enough time to polish up their entries ahead of submissions which can only be submitted online to [email protected].
