A Niger Delta leader and activist, Hon. Gabriel Patterson Unyeowaji, has expressed dissatisfaction with the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) for not investigating the allegation made by Mujahid Dokubo Asari.

Dokubo-Asari claimed that military helicopters were hovering over his residence during the recent local government elections in Rivers State

In a statement released, Unyeowaji, the Igrigi 1 of Niger Delta, condemned the DHQ’s threat to neutralize Dokubo-Asari, calling it unwarranted and a threat to democratic security.

He argued that the DHQ’s response without any official investigation suggests complicity in the event that triggered Dokubo-Asari’s comments.

“If this issue is approached correctly, the first step is to revisit Dokubo-Asari’s comment, which is essentially about self-defense and homeowners’ rights protected by Nigerian law,” Unyeowaji said.

He referred to Dokubo-Asari’s claim that FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, allegedly sent an unmarked helicopter to hover over his residence in Obuama, Rivers State. Unyeowaji emphasized that no Nigerian law permits unauthorized aircraft to fly over private property without official clearance, calling for the DHQ to address the situation transparently.

Unyeowaji raised several questions regarding the DHQ’s involvement: “Did the Defence Headquarters order the helicopter to fly over Dokubo-Asari’s residence? If so, why? And if not, why the rush to defend the unauthorized flight?”

He also questioned why the DHQ ignored Dokubo-Asari’s accusation against Wike and whether there were rogue elements within the military who may be behind the alleged helicopter activity.

Unyeowaji urged the DHQ to focus its efforts on addressing pressing security issues such as banditry and terrorism in the North, rather than threatening individuals like Dokubo-Asari, who has contributed to national security.

He called for the military to remain neutral in political matters, particularly in Rivers State, and suggested that Dokubo-Asari should consider filing for the enforcement of his fundamental human rights against the DHQ.

Unyeowaji concluded by urging the National Assembly, especially the Senate Committee on Defence, to summon representatives of the Defence Headquarters for questioning, emphasizing that Nigeria is a democracy, not a military regime.
