“It’s quite historical,” Udokwu says. “It’s Achebe’s personal narrative of the events that led to the Civil War and its aftermath. If you take your time to read that book, you will find out that Nigeria will get better if the views of Achebe are respected.”
Udokwu explains that “what we have in this country is selective amnesia. We choose to forget things to be remembered and remember those to be forgotten. That is why this country has been in quagmire.” He adds that this is why years are moving forward but the country is sliding backward.
“For me, it doesn’t matter what party you belong to. Anything that happens within the system affects every one of us, no matter where we come from or our religion. We really need to look at ourselves properly and see how we can make things better for everybody,” Udokwu says.
‘There Was a Country’ was Achebe’s last work before he died in 2013 at the age of 82.
