As Adamawa State prepares for a knowledge-based economy, it is making strategic investments in digital infrastructure, human capital development, and policy reforms. A knowledge-based economy thrives on innovation, digital skills, research, and technology-driven industries. Some key areas where the state government is investing in order to propel the state into the 21st century includes amongst others:
1. Digital Infrastructure & Connectivity
•Fiber Optic Expansion: In November 2024, the state partnered with Broadband Connectivity Network (BCN) to launch a carrier-neutral fiber optic cable network. This project aims to provide high-speed internet access across the state, fostering a digitally inclusive environment. The government’s approval of a Zero Right of Way (RoW) fee was pivotal in facilitating this development. To attract telecom investors and expand digital connectivity, the state government has waived RoW charges. This is crucial as it reduces the operational cost for potential investors.
2. Human Capital Development & Digital Skills
•Adamawa Digital Academy: This is a transformative initiative launched by the state Government to equip youth and civil servants with essential digital skills, fostering innovation and enhancing the state’s digital economy. The academy aims to train 100,000 individuals, focusing on youth and women, to prepare them for opportunities in the technology-driven world. Participants will receive training and certification in various fields, including – Software Development, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Digital Marketing, Cloud Computing, Creative and Visual Arts, VSAT Technology and Administrative Professional Skills.
The academy plans to train 70,000 young people in in-demand digital skills, providing pathways to tech-based careers and entrepreneurial opportunities. Also about 30,000 civil servants will be equipped with digital tools and knowledge to improve efficiency and enhance digital literacy within government operations.
The establishment of this academy further demonstrates a strong commitment to building a digitally empowered community, ready to thrive in the global digital economy.
•Microsoft & Wootlab Foundation Partnership: In a significant move to enhance digital literacy, the Adamawa State Government has partnered with Wootlab Foundation and Microsoft to train 100,000 citizens in digital skills. The governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri formalized this collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), underscoring the state’s commitment to technological advancement and youth empowerment.
This initiative aims to equip participants with essential digital competencies, thereby fostering economic growth and creating employment opportunities within the state. The training program is accessible to all interested individuals, with registration available at the official portal:
Wootlab Foundation, in partnership with Microsoft, is dedicated to transforming Adamawa’s future by empowering youths through digital skills. Their collaboration with the state government reflects a shared vision of leveraging technology for socio-economic development.
This strategic partnership is poised to position Adamawa State as a hub for digital innovation, aligning with global trends and preparing its workforce for the demands of the modern economy.
3. Education & Research
The government is working on embedding ICT and coding into the school curriculum to equip students with relevant digital skills. The government is also actively encouraging the strengthening of partnerships between universities and the private sector to foster research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
4. Innovation & Entrepreneurship
The state is in the process of establishing innovation hubs where startups and young entrepreneurs can develop digital solutions with the support of government institutions and partner organisations. The government is also exploring for partnerships with global tech firms and financial institutions to support small businesses and digital entrepreneurs.
To fully transition into a knowledge-based economy, the Adamawa State Government is investing in ICT infrastructure, education, and policy reforms while fostering collaboration between the government, private sector, and international organizations. When these efforts are fully implemented and operational, the state will become the for digital innovation and economic growth in at least the north east sub-region.
