Adamu: It will be shameful for Buhari to handover to opposition

Senator Abdullahi Adamu

  • Nigerians will decide – PDP

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu has said President Muhammadu Buhari would not hand over power to an opposition party on May 29, 2023.

He said it would be shameful for the president to hand over power to any political party, other than the APC.

Reacting to claims that Buhari was not fully participating in the campaign activities of the APC ahead of the 2023 elections, Adamu said the claims were just mere speculations.

Adamu, a former governor of Nasarawa State who spoke to the BBC Hausa Service yesterday said Buhari is fully committed and working for the emergence of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as his successor on May 29, 2023.

“Anybody that says he is in the forefront for the party’s success more than President Buhari is lying. This is because it will be shameful for the president to hand over power to any other party than his own. So President Buhari loves the party and its success more than anybody.

“What people didn’t understand is that Buhari is the president of the country. He has a responsibility, which he swears and considers an obligation for him to discharge, which is ruling the country.

“That is why he has to be very careful with his engagement in the campaign activities. Otherwise, the opposition will say he is rather working for APC than the country, which is his primary responsibility,” Adamu said.

He added, “Things are going well for us, unless we are ungrateful to God. Because based on what we are seeing in reality, APC is leading everywhere. People have accepted us and even the opposition knows that we are leading.”

Nigerians will decide – PDP

But reacting, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said only Nigerians can determine who becomes the next president.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba told Daily Trust yesterday that the APC was jittery having “realised” that Nigerians had accepted to return PDP to power.

“It is shameful for APC to have been in power in the first place, a man who has a lot of things hanging on his neck, a man who destroyed Nasarawa State as a governor. It is actually a shame that they came to power.

“Adamu is living in another world because he is not in tune with the aspirations of Nigerians to have a good life. We are focused on Nigerians who will determine who will be their president and we know they have made that decision from our campaign, engagement with the people. Atiku is always ready to engage with Nigerians, the press unlike the APC candidate.”
