A former governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Gombe State, Nafi’u Bala, has declared himself the national chairman of the party.
Speaking at a press conference Wednesday night in Abuja, Bala, a former deputy national chairman of the ADC, accused the David Mark-led leadership of unlawfully taking over the party and breaching its constitution.
He said “bonafide” party members would challenge the alleged takeover in court.
Efforts to get a formal response from the Mark-led leadership were unsuccessful as of press time. However, a senior member of the leadership, who asked not to be named, said it had been decided to ignore Bala, arguing that responding to him would only encourage others to take a similar route.

The source referred our correspondent to the resolution of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Tuesday. During the meeting, the party formally reconstituted its National Working Committee (NWC), affirming Mark’s leadership and cementing the official takeover of the party by leaders of the newly formed opposition coalition.
The reconstitution followed the dissolution of the former NWC through a motion moved by the immediate past National Organising Secretary, Alhaji Suleiman Ibrahim. The motion was seconded and unanimously adopted via a voice vote by NEC members.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were present at the meeting.
