The faction of African Democratic Congress, ADC, in Cross River State, led by former governor of the state, Senator Liyel Imoke and former minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Usani Usani clashed on Tuesday in Calabar with the faction led by Dr John Ogar and former guber candidate in 2023, Dr Effiong Nyong.

Imoke in his capacity as party leader in the state had summoned meeting of the party but Ogar’s faction said the meeting disowned the meeting describing it as illegal.

Ogar’s faction insisted the meeting will not hold as they did not recognize Senator Imoke and Usani and their followers.

As a result, commotion and public disturbance ensued, leading to intervention by the police.

Dr MacFarlane Ejah, a key member of Dr John Ogar’s faction said, “Some persons who we don’t know called for a meeting outside the knowledge of the party chairman in the state.. I want to say however that ADC doesn’t have factions in the state. But such meeting without the knowledge of our party chairman is illegal.”

Usani and Imoke said they called the meeting in their capacities as national vice chairman  and state party leader, to address salient issues in order to strengthen it in the state.

Reacting, the police PRO, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, in a statement, confirmed that there was an intra-party disagreement within the ADC in the state.

He said, “Personnel of the Police Command have been deployed to the area to ensure peace, maintain law and order, and prevent any breakdown of public peace. At the moment, the two factions of the party are currently before the Commissioner of Police for an interview and dialogue aimed at resolving the issues and maintaining calm.”
