ADC Picks Speaker’s Kinsman For Kwara Governorship Race

Former member of the House of Representatives, Zakari Mohammed, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 governorship election in Kwara State.

Zakari represented Baruten/Kaiama Federal Constituency in the National Assembly and hails from Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara North Senatorial District.

He emerged winner of the party’s governorship primary conducted on Saturday in the state.

Speaking shortly after his emergence, Zakari described the ADC as a party for ordinary Nigerians and pledged inclusive and accountable leadership if elected governor.

According to him, the party represents the interests of youths, women, artisans, professionals, civil servants and other categories of Nigerians seeking an alternative political platform.

“ADC is a party of the youth, women, mechanics, drivers, watchmen, CEOs and ordinary Nigerians. We carry everybody along.

“By the grace of God, ADC will occupy Ahmadu Bello Way and ADC will occupy Aso Rock”, he said.

The former lawmaker dismissed claims that the ADC remained a fringe political party, insisting that the party was gaining momentum among Nigerians dissatisfied with the existing political order.

He called on civil servants, pensioners, farmers, traditional rulers and other stakeholders across the state to support the party’s vision for transparent and accountable governance.

“We are not the kind of party that will disappear after getting into government. ADC will remain accountable to the people,” he added.

The party also unveiled candidates for the Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly positions across the 16 local government areas of the state.

For the senatorial seats, Risikat Motunrayo Abdullahi emerged as ADC candidate for Kwara Central, Taoheed Bala Usman secured the Kwara North ticket, while Akogun Iyiola Oyedepo emerged candidate for Kwara South Senatorial District.

Among the House of Representatives candidates announced by the party are Dr. Saad Oladimeji Issa for Ilorin East/Ilorin South Federal Constituency, Abdulkadir Olanrewaju Oba Aluko for Asa/Ilorin West, Hassan Zubairu Muhammad for Edu/Moro/Patigi and Idris Usman Hariru for Kaiama/Baruten Federal Constituency.

Others include Hon. Olayonu Tope for Offa/Oyun/Ifelodun Federal Constituency and Engr. Abarisoko Abiodun Takit for Isin/Irepodun/Ekiti/Oke-Ero Federal Constituency.

The ADC also announced candidates for various State House of Assembly constituencies across the state as part of its preparations for the 2027 elections.

Political observers say the emergence of Zakari Mohammed may further strengthen the contest ahead of the governorship election, particularly in Kwara North where the former lawmaker is believed to have maintained significant grassroots influence over the years.

His emergence also adds another northern candidate to the growing list of contenders seeking to succeed Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq in 2027.
