Notwithstanding his very busy schedule as Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki has a way of keeping in touch with grassroots and solving issues back at home. One would have expected that the demands of his office would have cut the former Kwara Governor away from the people at the grassroots.
From all indications at his Kwara Central Senatorial district and the state at large, ‘Omo Baba Oloye’ is doing all that is expected of him not to lose touch with the base that entrusted so much confidence in him and gave him opportunity to represent them.
Medicaid, social services, education support, empowerment and employment, requests for infrastructural development among others, make up the hundreds of requests for helps being handled daily at Saraki’s constituency office in Ilorin.
Whether PDP or APC, Kowa or SDP, the requests and demands of constituents don’t come in the toga of a political party, it doesn’t matter which political party the constituents belong to or whoever they voted in the election that brought in Saraki as a Senator, what matters most is adding value to the lives of constituents and that Saraki has been doing without being partisan.
Just recently over N10 million was disbursed to over 400 indigent students to pay their school fees. It didn’t stop there, many Kwara state students who have showed unusual academic excellence as First Class students, have been commended with scholarship, while some of the students have been sponsored to further their studies abroad by Saraki. That is one of Saraki’s way of rewarding excellence without making noise.
His massive support for education has, to a very large extent, given the education sector in his constituency and Kwara state a great fillip for better performance. Just in 2016 alone, over 47 classrooms were constructed in both Kwara Central and other parts of the Emirate.
With the world becoming digital and most external examinations like UTME now computer-based, Saraki donated computer sets and instructional materials to many Secondary Schools in his Senatorial District in order for students in his senatorial District to favourably compete with others around the world.
The demand for water and its scarcity especially during the dry season is a major source of concern for government and policy makers. Saraki’s intervention in ensuring water scarcity is left in the past cannot be left unmentioned, with his involvement in the expansion of some dams in the state, like the Sobi Dam to serve the Central senatorial district and some parts of northern senatorial district. Aside that, as part of measures to mitigate against scarcity and ensure the people don’t have to go through hell to have access to water, he has sunk about 139 boreholes in various places within Kwara Central, out of which 117 had been completed. Gradually and within little time, every community will have unhindered access to portable water. Saraki seems not to be leaving any shine unturned in achieving this.
While the common chorus in other areas has been disappointments over low performance by representatives, in Kwara Central it’s been a different chorus of commendation and accolades for Bukola Saraki for raising the bar of performance despite myriads of excuses he could hinge on as reasons for lack of time for his people.
