Bauchi State has been witnessing incessant road traffic accidents of recent leading to the loss of many innocent lives.

But for how long do the citizens have to suffer before the concerned authorities take the appropriate action?

Statistics released by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Bauchi State Command, showed that about 500 road accidents were recorded in the state in 2021 alone. It said more than 400 lives were lost and 157 persons sustained injuries.

These figures are quite worrisome and unacceptable.

It is high time we questioned the constitutional responsibilities of the concerned authorities of securing the lives of the citizens. We must find solutions to this carnage beyond just publicising it.

The authorities responsible need to identify the major causes of the ugly trend, if not all, with the aim of bringing the situation to an end.

We cannot continue this way.

We must come hard on drivers involved in reckless driving and vehicle owners who drive rickety vehicles putting the lives of road users in danger.

Citizens should understand that no responsible society can develop unless there is law and order.

Therefore, traffic offenders should be dealt with accordingly and be publicised to serve as a deterrent to others.
