‘On Monday of Last Week,’ a short story by award-winning author, Chimamanda Adichie will be adapted into a film. The story which is from her collection, ‘The thing around your neck,’ is the first of her short stories to be adapted for screen. It will be done by the Ghanaian filmmaker and director, Adoma Akosua Owusu and her production company, Obibini Pictures.
Reports about the project said, Owusu, – speaking on the themes of race, liberalism, and sexuality – is the story resonated with her films on the ‘triple consciousness’ of the African immigrant. While she has the support of the Guggenheim Foundation, she has also launched a $30,000 kick starter campaign.
‘On Monday of last week’ is a story of Kamara, a Nigerian immigrant, on her journey to self-discovery. She is employed as a nanny for 5-year-old Josh, whose interracial parents Tracy and Neil, live in an upscale urban home.
With Neil’s guidance, Kamara prepares Josh for an academic competition while his mother is absent. However, Kamara finds Tracy’s occasional outburst from her art studio in the basement, intriguing until one afternoon when they finally meet.
Owusu who seeks to adapt literature from contemporary African writers, beginning with this work, has produced films which have won awards and have been viewed worldwide.
