The National Commission for Mass literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education (NMEC) has flagged off training for rural facilitators in Kano toward ensuring inclusive, equitable and quality education for all.

Addressing participants in Kano, the Executive Secretary of NMEC, Professor Akpama Simon Ibor, said the Rural Facilitators Scheme (RFS) is based on the commission’s determination to ensure best practices and encourage states and local governments to live up to their statutory responsibilities in the provision of mass literacy to all categories of unreached and underserved learners.

Also speaking, the Deputy Director, Literacy and Development, Alugbere Rose, said the idea of RFS was conceived to address the myriad of challenges confronting the adult and non-formal education sub-sector which include inadequate and irregular payment of facilitators’ allowances by many states, and capacity gaps in the number of facilitators required to meet up with the huge number of non-literate adults and youth.

The programme in Kano, which saw participants drawn from 10 states, is expected to make 11,340 learners literate in the next seven months.
