Residents of Kubwa village in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been reconnected to the national grid after a two-week blackout.
Abuja Metro reported last Thursday that officials from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) had disconnected the power supply over an alleged assault on staff who were conducting a routine check for illegal connections.
In a phone interview yesterday, the community youth leader, Buhari Abu, told our reporter that AEDC officials returned to the community on Monday and reconnected the supply at the transformer where it had been disconnected.
An AEDC source confirmed the development, stating that the branch office in Gbazango was directed by a higher office to restore the power.
The source explained that the main office was frustrated that the actions of a few residents had resulted in the entire community being punished, leading to the order for reconnection. The source also revealed that a cable (not an armored one) was stolen during the blackout, but it was replaced by the AEDC to restore power to the area.
In the meantime, the residents have reportedly raised money to fence the transformer in the community to protect it from vandals.
