The management of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) says it will confer a honorary degree on the President of African Development Bank, Dr Akinwumi Adesina and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas for their exceptional contribution to the country.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Peters Olufemi  disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja ahead of the school’s 14th convocation ceremony coming up on Saturday.

He said Adesina, an erudite scholar, who has affected lives across the world, will be awarded with Doctor of Humane Letter while Abbass will get Doctor of Business Administration after the University Joint Senate Committee selected them.

Prof Olufemi also said Adesina will deliver the convocation lecture on Friday while Prof Attahiru Jega will chair the occasion.

The vice chancellor said the university will be graduating a total of 17, 420 students made up of 10,967 undergraduates, 6, 413 post graduated (2,210 post graduates and 4,310 Masters) and 40 PhDs.

He said out of these, a total of 16 students will bag First Class, 1, 417 Second Class Upper,  5,518 Second Class Lower and 2, 761 Third Class.

The vice chancellor further said 51 inmates will be graduating from across 14 correctional  centres as well,  with 40 undergraduates and 11 post graduates.

He said the university has over the years been sponsoring the education of the inmates, adding that the inmates must demonstrate interest in studying by purchasing a form before the university can come in and take over the sponsorship.

He said following the success the university recorded in the correctional centres, the management has asked that NOUN increase the number of centres of operation.

To the students, he said they university has equipped them with skills and value that will help them in life as they graduate.

He said the university has grown over the years to be leading in technology in Nigeria as no university can boast of deploying the kind of technology NOUN is deploying in educating its students.
