The African Development Bank (AfDB) has unveiled its plan to convert Veritas University, Abuja, as Centre of Excellence for data and coding innovation in Nigeria.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Hyacinth Ichoku, disclosed this during an interactive session with journalists, on Thursday.

He said president of the Bank, Akinwunmi Adesina, made the promise after seeing various innovative projects carried out by the students.

He said the President of AfDB who was impressed with what he saw made the promise in partnership with the varsity during its last convocation

Prof. Ichoku also disclosed that the 300 level students the Department of Software Engineering of the institution have emerged as the best in the African Telecommunication Union (ATU) innovation challenge and received cash prize of 20,000 dollars.

The university emerged winners after beating 25 participants from other universities in Africa.

He also disclosed that the student of the varsity won All Nigerian Universities Debating Championship and went on to win the Pan-African University Debating championship and are to represent Africa in the intercontinental debate coming up in New York in April.

“Our commitment to providing quality education and moulding the holistic personality has been unwavering, leading to numerous accomplishments that have shaped the university’s reputation both nationally and internationally,” he said.

He further said: “One of our proudest achievements is our consistent focus on academic excellence. Our dedicated faculty members have engaged in cutting-edge research, published in reputable journals, and received prestigious awards for their contributions to knowledge.”

Prof Ichoku however said the varsity is looking forward to welcoming investors and government partners who will take risk to invest in some of the innovations that varsity have created to align them with industrial use.

“The university’s academic programmes have been recognised for their quality and relevance in preparing students for the challenges of the modern world,” he said.

While noting that their achievements not only reflects the caliber of students they nurture at Veritas University but also highlights their dedication to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship among their students, he said their next plans is to develop prototype of most of the innovations and do an exhibition to showcase them to the intending investors and relevant government agencies.
