Anthony Brown, a product design student from the University of Nottingham has fabricated a low-cost grain storage unit to help smallholder African farmers deal with post-harvest losses.
The design is in response to the “Waste Not, Want Not” challenge, sponsored by a corporation called Fazer, which called for design that helped minimise food waste.
The storage, named Si-low follows a principle known as hermetic seal which implies air and moisture cannot enter or leave the system. Thus, grains stored in this way lasts longer because they are protected from the atmosphere.
The Si-Low is completely power free and so does not have any running costs and can be used anywhere. It was estimated at under $40, but it could cost $20 or lower.
The Si-Low is made from HDPE plastic which could be stacked whilst being transported.
