A major competitor with their voices have been guns of American police officers shooting and killing unarmed African-American males; and aroused thousands of racially mixed protestors in American cities.
Amnesty International described this pandemic tamely as ‘’startling’’. Steven Hawkins, a leader of the organisation, pleaded that the gap in low number of unarmed whites killed by the American police ‘’speaks to something that needs to be examined, to get to the bottom of why you’re twice as likely to be shot if you’re an unarmed black male’’. They do not condemn and talk of taking leaders of offending American police departments to the International Criminal Court for violations of human rights of African-Americans.
The American culture of policing rural and urban neighbourhoods has legacies which go back to England and local slavery in southern states. British authorities protected royal ladies from having their handbags snatched by poor urchins and beggars on urban streets by rounding up the poor vermin and locking them up in prisons. When prisons became overcrowded, their wretched residents were put on ships and deported to distant lands like Australia and New Zealand. Landowners among British immigrants to the Americas also bought prisoners who on arrival on their farms worked for a given period to buy back their freedom.
Farmers in southern states formed groups of whites who hunted and recaptured blacks who escaped from slave labour to seek freedom as far north as Canada. The captured were severely tortures as deterrence to others plotting to run away. A culture of official terror became part of the local economy. In the southwest and the Midwest states, groups of whites used violence to grab land from Mexicans and ‘’American Indians’’ and to retain it. Like apartheid South Africa, white farmers used the police to capture blacks to work on their farms.
The American trick of winning loyalties of citizens new immigrants by boiling a socio-economic ‘’melting pot’’ always excluded Africans who arrived as slaves. Practices of economic crimes by  gangs of whites burning down big businesses owned by African-Americans in urban areas like Philadelphia; humiliation through racial segregation; official state policies which denied them access to quality education have served to give new immigrants targets to feel superior to and to also overtake. Jewish communities have swung from solidarity in fighting against discrimination against them and African-Americans, to either exploiting black customers or displacing them from urban housing in slum areas like Harlem. New immigrants from India, Korea, China, Vietnam, Iran and others arrive with their own native racism, including Indian caste prejudices.
It has been argued that the 2014 and 2015 pandemic of police killing of black males is linked to ‘’implicit bias’’ (or learned prejudice) which make police see black males as violent and likely to kill them if they do not shoot first. Between January 16th, 2014 when police officer J.Castro shot and killed 26 years-old Jordan Baker, to December 21, 2014 when officer Tim Loehmann shot and killed 12 years old Tamir Rice, the NAACP recorded 13 unarmed black men killed. The Guardian (of London) newspaper counted 102unarmed black men among a total of 464 people killed by the police in the first five months of 2015.
This slaughter of black males is coming at the peak of black youths identifying with President Barrack Obama as a role model for their own aspirations for life with dignity as an American citizen. Leaders of the Tea Party section of the Republican Party have been openly racist and disrespectful of President Obama; while the party had vigorously passes State laws which deny blacks to register to vote in local and federal elections. These voters, immigrants from South America (or Hispanics/Latinos) and Asian immigrants voted heavily for candidates of the Democratic Party, including Obama. They are likely to vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016. The current killings of unarmed African-American males (95%) and females (5%), has echoes of cultures of violence calculated since 1704 to intimidate black slaves.
African competitors of Amnesty International should rise and shame the American government for failure to protect and promote human rights of its African-American citizens. When President Robert Mugabe used rough tactics to take back land from white farmers, a din of condemnation and demonization of him hit high heavens. The African Union must recall and honour voices of Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa and Kwame Nkrumah ringing in the United Nations committing Africans to protecting the dignity and freedom of persons of African descent everywhere.
