Eight Nigerian Muslim scholars were among the dozens of the new leadership of the Union of African Ulama (scholars) which emerged at the just concluded second International Conference of the union in Makkah Saudi Arabia.
The National Coordinator of the Riyadh-based Committee of Dawah Program (CDP) in Nigeria, Imam Sufyan Abdallah Malumfashi, told Daily Trust that over 250 scholars from over 46 countries across the continent participated in the conference sponsored by Prince Bandar bin Salman.
One of the Nigerian scholars who emerged as the head of the Media and Publicity Committee and also a lecturer at the Iman University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Dr. Elkhidiru Abdul Baaq Mohammed, listed other Nigerian who emerged as Dr Bashir Ali Umar of the Bayero University Kano (BUK) as the Vice President and Dr Abdul Rasaq Abdul Majeed Alaro of the University of Ilorin as the head of committee on Research and Translation.
Mohammed gave the names of others as Dr Muhammed Sani Umar of the Jigawa State University as the head of Membership committee; Dr AbdulGaniy Abdulhameed Akorede of the Uni Ilorin, Dialogue and Reconciliation committee member; Sheik Abdulwahab Abdullahi of the Ibn Baaz Foundation, Kano as Endowment committee member, and Dr Ibrahim Abdullahi Jalo from Taraba State as Education committee member.
Daily Trust reports that Sheik Saheed Burhaan Abdullah from Comoros Island emerged the new President of the union while Sheik Saeed Baba Seelah from Mali emerged the new Secretary General.
A member of the Nigerian Guests of King Salman for this year’s hajj and the Imam of Zone 4 Mosque Abuja, Malam Khamisu Nasidi, said the emergence of many Nigerians in the African scholars’ executive is an indication of the leading role Nigeria is known for in knowledge and goodness.
He also commended six Nigerian students who emerged winners in the 10 degrees of Islamic General Knowledge competition.
They were Salisu Muhammed Gumel from Jigawa, Tasiu Abdullahi, Katsina; Yakub Muhammad Aliagan, Kwara; Muhammad Ahma, Ondo; Ibrahim Abba Salisu, Bauchi and Abbas Abdulateef Olalekan, Osun states respectively.
