The El Amin player who made his first appearance in a competitive polo game in 1986 in Plateau State while speaking to Fever Pitch via telephone yesterday added that preparations are in top gear by the organisers to make the October event a success
“I just came off the horse right now and the reason being that the African Patrons Tournament which is one of my favourite is around the corner so everyone is preparing hard for it and the reason I enjoy the event is that it is a high goal competition with stars from all over the world showing up to grace it so I’m sure everyone will enjoy it” the Kaduna born player said.
Although team entry is still open, old favourites are expected to be back to a tournament which has regularly attracted all the best known patrons in Nigerian polo, among them, Sayyu Dantata, Kashim Bukar, Bode Makanjuola, Lawal Mangal, Dawule Baba, Sheriff Shagaya, Muhammad Babangida and Hon. Dimeji Bankole.
Among the foreign stars expected to honour the event are high goal stars such as Diego White, Alejandro Novillo Astrada, Ezequeil Martinez, Tito Ginazu, Santiago Estrada, Tom De Bruin and the Watson Brothers.
Formerly called the African Master tournament, the event which debuted in 2003 was the brain child of the Chairman Board of Director of Kangimi Resort, Mallam Ahmed Dasuki, whose idea it was to give the game of polo in the continent plenty of international exposure.
The Fifth Chukker venue is one of Nigeria’s best internationally known sporting venues, having hosted high profile polo competitions featuring top professional players from around the world.
