Teachers from different African countries under the auspices of Africa Federation of Teaching Regulatory Authorities (AFTRA) are meeting in Abuja to make sure that people employed to teach in schools are effective in their work, among others.

The 7th Teaching and Learning in Africa Conference and 9th Roundtable which would last May 14-19, is entitled ‘Teaching and Learning in Africa in Context of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) and Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA)’.

Registrar of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Professor Josiah Olusegun Ajiboye, said the conference would chart a way forward on teacher-professional development and articulate “a pathway for sound, efficient and functional education in our various domains to the betterment of our nation.”

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, said without adequate, qualified and professional teachers, the goal of having an educational system that produces quality graduates, who can favorably compete globally, cannot be achieved.

He said: “Standards have to be created and maintained to ensure quality.”

President of AFTRA, Mabutho Cele, said the conference would ensure that a number of targets are accomplished including universal access to primary and secondary education, early childhood development and universal pre-primary education, relevant skills for decent work as well as equal access to technical/vocational and higher education.
