Major stakeholders across African countries, under the umbrella of African Academic Network on Internet Policy, on Tuesday demanded a centralized data collections and protections for Africa countries to mitigate against fraud and loss of data.

This was the resolution of the African Academic network, a united African organization at a two-day workshop held at International Institute of Tropical Agriculture IITA, Ibadan.

Some of the facilitators at the workshop were;  Godfred Frempong (PhD) CSIR Science and Technology and Research, Ghana,  Nnenna Nwakanma Senior Policy Manager World Wide Web Foundation, Tunji Olaopa, Executive Vice-chairman, Ibadan school of government and public policy, ISGPP, Ibadan, Tope Ogundipe, director of programs, paradigm initiative, John Walubengo center multimedia university of Kenya.

Olaopa in his speech lamented that the contributions of African countries to the growth of internet has been very weak, hence, there is need for the entire African countries to come together so as to encourage improvement in the information sector.

Godfred Frempong (PhD) CSIR Science and Technology and Research Institute of Ghana said there is need for the authority to look into the way datas are being collected in Ghana, adding that African countries are lagging behind in terms of information technology.

A Senior Policy Manager World Wide Web Foundation, Nnenna Nwakanma said the whole world has gone into digital economy, saying it will be encouraging if Nigeria government can provide leadership in the new global market.

Speaking on the security of the data stored on internet, Mr. John Walubengo center multimedia university of Keny said there is need to adopt maximum data protection mechanism in protecting citizens’ privacy.
