About four thousand students drawn from 30 secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been sensitized on hand washing.
Africare, an international non-governmental organization, under the Power Foward programme enlightened the students on clean hands as a recipe for healthy living.
The event was part of activities to mark this year’s 2018 Global Hand Washing Day, which sought to identify the connection between good personal hygiene practices, nutrition and good health.
A statement from Power Forward said the programme was to raise awareness on how washing hands properly before and after meals, when cooking meals and feeding others can significantly improve personal hygiene and good healh.
“The project seeks to increase proper hygienic culture in schools as washing hands properly with soap is good sanitary practice that can prevent ailments such as food poisoning and cholera,” the statement said.
The statement explained that the students were taught the eight steps of hand washing and advised to remember and use those steps before and after taking meals.
“The project installed hand wash stations in schools at crucial locations; outside the toilets, beside assembly halls and beside classes to encourage students to use these utilities to improve personal hygiene.
“The students pledged to share the hand wash techniques with friends and family members,” the statement added.
