Hon. Dr. Jim Chimezie Okolo has been appointed Chief Coordinator of the All Federal Capital Territory Sports Association (AFSA), a move officials say is aimed at strengthening sports development across the Federal Capital Territory.

The appointment, endorsed by AFSA President, HRM Eze Sir Ifeanyi Eke, and the Director-General, Mr. Agbor Clinton Ayuk, mandates Dr. Okolo to mobilise stakeholders, advance grassroots sports, and support efforts to position the FCT as a centre of athletic talent. He pledged to uphold AFSA’s rules and discharge his duties with integrity during his oath-taking.

Speaking on the appointment, AFSA Director-General Agbor Clinton Ayuk described Dr. Okolo as an asset to the association, expressing confidence that his involvement would enhance AFSA’s visibility and performance.

Ayuk added that AFSA is focused on transforming Abuja’s sports landscape, noting that the recent appointment of Crown Prince Arthur Eze as Grand Patron reflects the association’s drive toward expansion and excellence.

Chairman of AFSA’s Board of Trustees, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, also welcomed the appointment, describing it as a significant step in the association’s effort to deepen private-sector contribution to sports development in the FCT. He said AFSA was established to create opportunities for private entities to support Abuja’s ambition of becoming a leading sports hub in Africa.

Dr. Okolo’s appointment comes at a time when sports development is being deployed as a tool to address social challenges and strengthen community engagement in the FCT. As Chief Coordinator, he was responsible for programme design, policy implementation, and stakeholder mobilisation within the sports sector.

Beyond his work with AFSA, Dr. Okolo holds several regional and international roles. He serves as the West African Coordinator of the Universal Migration Enlightenment Centre, a position endorsed by the Global Migration Research Institute in Maryland, USA. He is also the National Coordinator of Nouvelle Perspective, an international NGO focused on democratic integrity and humanitarian initiatives.

He is recognised as an International Elections Diplomat, having received specialised training at the University of Lomé, Togo, through a programme conducted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), and the university.

In 2023, he was inducted as a United Nations Mayor for World Peace during the World Peace Day observance in Lagos. In 2024, he was named Nigerian team lead for the U.S. Presidential Election Observers under the auspices of the United Nations and Nouvelle Perspective. In 2025, the Federal Capital Territory Administration appointed him Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the FCT Para-Volley Association, with a mandate from October 2025 to April 2026.

Dr. Okolo also serves as Nigeria’s Country Representative for the U.S. Latino America Chamber of Commerce and was conferred with a chieftaincy title by HRH John Adimkpa Nkpe, King of Eleme Kingdom in Rivers State, in February 2025.

Although his tenure as AFSA Chief Coordinator has ended, his initiatives — including inter-school tournaments, mentorship programmes, and new partnerships — continue to shape the association’s activities. AFSA officials say his contribution helped elevate sports beyond recreation, positioning it as a tool for unity and youth empowerment.
