A Kano State High Court sitting in Miller Road on Wednesday, again ordered that Hafsat Suraj (24), the housewife accused of killing her ‘house help’ be referred to the state psychiatric hospital for mental evaluation under the custody of Kurmawa Correctional Centre, Kano.

It would be recalled that the Federal Psychiatric Hospital, Dawanau submitted its medical report on mental evaluation of the defendant as ordered by the court at the last adjourned date.

The defendant, who lives in Unguwa Uku Quarters Kano, is facing a culpable homicide charge.

Justice Zuwaira Yusuf, however, ordered that the defendant be referred to the state medical doctor for treatment and evaluation.

The judge said when the new report is submitted, “I will make a comparison on the investigation to enable the court to look at the reports and exercise fair Justice.”

Recalled that at the previous sitting the court ordered that Hafsat be referred to a psychiatric hospital for mental evaluation.

The court also refused to grant bail to Dayyabu Abdullahi, Hafsat’s husband, one Adamu Muhammad and Nasidi Muhammad for giving false information to prevent Hafsat from legal punishment for the alleged murder of Nafiu.

Justice Zuwaira Yusuf held that the offence is serious and therefore the defendants cannot be granted bail, except in special circumstances.

“ I hereby refused the bail application,” the judge held.

The defence team made up of Sani Ammani, Haruna Magashi and Rabiu Abdullahi, urged the court to adjourn the matter not more than 14 days for hearing or day-to-day hearing under Sections 390(3)(4) of ACJL 2019, Kano State.

The trial judge ordered for an accelerated hearing of the case and adjourned the matter until March 26.
