A fire outbreak in the early hours of Tuesday razed about 55 shops in the herbal medicine section of the Zamfara Central Market, dealing a fresh blow to traders still reeling from a similar inferno that destroyed 103 shops just six weeks ago.
The fire, which started around 1am, left many traders devastated, though the cause is yet to be confirmed.
Alhaji Sa’adu Dahiru, chairman of the affected section, said, “The fire also affected some blouse and seasoning sellers. Many of our members have lost everything. One of them had N50,000 saved in his shop to deposit at the bank, but the fire destroyed both the cash and his goods.”
Another victim, Muhammad Kabiru, said he lost goods worth about N14 million. “But I take it as the will of Allah. This is a trial from God, and we must endure it. I only appeal to the state government for support to restart our businesses. We are not asking for much, just something to help us begin again.”

The market’s managing director, Alhaji Ahmad Salihu Shinkafi, said an investigation was ongoing to determine the cause.
