Again, Gunmen kill 45 near Maiduguri

In a continuous raid on villages in Borno State, insurgents suspected to be Boko Haram fighters on Wednesday night opened fire and killed 45 people while several others sustained gunshots wounds in Barderi, a village on the outskirt of Maiduguri, local sources told Daily Trust.

Our correspondent gathered that the insurgents hoodwinked the villagers that they had come to preach to them and they gathered them in one place.

Another set of insurgents were said to have emerged and opened fire on the congregation.

The assailants also set ablaze several houses, shops and other belongings of the villagers, a source told newsmen in Maiduguri.

A resident of village, Mallam Abubakar who escaped the attack told newsmen that he counted 45 bodies after the attackers after left the village.

“They came to our village around 9pm and lied to us that they came to preach to us and when almost all the villagers had gathered, another set of insurgents emerged from nowhere and open fire on the congregation before we all scampered for safety. They also set houses on fire” he added.

But an unnamed survivor who spoke to the BBC Hausa service said that 42 people were killed when the insurgents stormed the village.

No official comment on the incident last night as both the police and the military have been silent on attacks on villagers in recent time.
