The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) has called on stakeholders in the telecom industry to desist from using non-type approved handset in order to improve the Quality of Services.
The Director of Zonal Operational of NCC, Mrs Helen Obi, made the call at Stakeholder’s Sensitization Workshop on the Hazardous Effect of Non-type Approved Handset and Impact of Quality of Service in Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja Nigeria’s capital.
Mrs Obi reiterated the Commission’s commitment in ensuring that the consumer enjoys their stake in the telecommunications industry and to regulate the industry effectively.
“It is worthy of note, that the public concern regarding the proliferation of non-type approved handsets and other terminal equipment in Nigerian market which has far reaching consequences on quality of service.
“It is in response to these concerns that the Commission has found it imperative to educate the general public on the menace of using non-type approved and substandard equipment including handsets,” she noted.
She added that the Commission ensures that all equipment purchased for the purpose of carrying out telecommunication services is satisfactorily utilized and the user gets value for his/her money.
“Consequently, the advantages of using type approved equipment including handsets are that it improves the quality of service, Network integrity and Safety of the end users and it also protect telecommunication network from terminal equipment connected to it among others’’, she added.
Some of the negative impact of the use of non-type approved handsets, according to her, include: poor quality of service, it damages the integrity of the network and Poses health implications.
Mrs. Helen however urged telecom consumers to strictly patronize equipment that are type approved by the Commission adding that NCC has clear mandate to ensure acceptable Quality of Standard (QoS) from telecoms service providers in the country.
The Chairman Gwagwalada Area Council, represented by the Head of Personnel Management Gwagwalada, Mrs. Amina Solomon, expresses their appreciation to the management of NCC for enlightened the Area Council on the negative effects of using counterfeit products.
He said: “Communication is key, there is no house without handset today but we operate our handset without knowing the genuine, standard or non-standard ones.
“Today we are aware that we can’t get the services one is looking for from them but one can get from the standard ones despite the hard economy of today’’.
