Agangara: A local wine joint that poses danger to Badawa residents

For several years, residents of Badawa Kan-Tsauni in Nassarawa local government area of Kano state have been making efforts to forestallnefarious activities that take place at Agangara, apopular local wine joint in the area.

The residents said they had reported the matter to many authorities including Nassarwa local government council, police, Hisbah Board and Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission with a view to ending the immoral activities but their efforts were unsuccessful.

Once it is 4pm, those that are patronizing the joint could be seen trooping to the place to have a cup or two of the local wine, while drug hawkers would line-up at the main entrance of the joint displaying their illicit drugs to attract buyers.

The major concern of the residents is that the evils that are being committed at the joint are gradually affecting the lives of their children, hence the place has become a source of concern to them. They said that unless government does something to address the situation, their lives and that of their children would continue to be in danger.

According to the Ward Head of Badawa Kan-Tsauni, Malam Kabiru Ali, so far 13 people had lost their lives at Agangara, while several women were divorced in their efforts to prevent their husbands from patronizing the joint.

He said, “We have counted 13 people who lost their lives at Agangara and I know several women who were divorced by their spouses because of this place. The affected women tried to stop their husbands from going to the place but in the end they were divorced.

“Many people have developed the habit of drinking local wine courtesy of Agangara. So, this place has become a source of concern to the residents of this area because it negatively affects our lives and unless something is done to address the situation, we will continue to face serious challenges.”

Alhaji Bello Kamilu Badawa regretted that some personalities in the area were supporting the wicked activities taking place in the community, lamenting that “we will expose those collaborators to the relevant authorities so that necessary action will be taken against them. This time around we will not spare any person that is supporting these evils.”

Malam Aminu Musa, a resident of the area, appealed to government to come to their aide to safeguard the future of the upcoming generation in the area, noting that “the danger is that whatever these people are doing, our children are watching them and may attempt to emulate them when they grow up.”

Musa lamented that another threat associated with the joint was that drug hawkers had invaded the area with illicit drugs, thereby recruiting youths into drug addiction in the community, noting that the new trend was posing serious danger to the residents.

He said, “The danger is that there is every tendency that the drug  hawkers will recruit our children into drug addiction. Parents and indeed the government must put their heads together to address this issue squarely before it is too late.”

Another resident of the area, Abdullahi Ibrahim Badawa advised the residents not to relent in their efforts to bring to an end the heinous activities being carried out at the joint, assuring that they would continue to push until the place is close down.

Badawa explained that they would continue to remind the relevant authorities about the place until necessary action is taken, saying “we will continue to write to the relevant authorities until they do something about the place. This is something that is affecting our lives and therefore we will not joke with it and I am sure no serious government will joke with anything affecting its people.”

Alhaji Aminu Abdulkadir Iliya, another resident of the area told Kano Chronicle that they had concluded arrangements to take the matter to Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission again as the commission had gotten a serious minded chairman.

“I have confidence that Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado will do something about this place. He is the type of person that will address this matter once and for all and we will soon take our case to him. We will also send another letter of complaint to Hisbah board,” he said.
