The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has reinforced its support for Nigeria’s education sector with the donation of learning materials and an assessment of its Smart School project in Bauchi State.

The intervention took place on Wednesday at the UBEC Model Smart School, Bauchi, where KOICA’s Country Director in Nigeria, Mr Eunsub KIM, said the project was driven by the need to ensure equal access to quality education through digital tools and a conducive learning environment.

KIM explained that the visit marked part of the first phase of the Smart School initiative, adding that preparations were underway for the launch of the second phase next year. He said the agency donated stationery and school bags to students, while teachers received diaries as part of efforts to boost teaching and learning.

A total of 500 school bags, stationery and mathematical sets were distributed to students, while teachers received diaries and 10 hard drives as performance incentives. KOICA officials also inspected the multimedia equipment earlier installed at the school.

Speaking at the event, the Director of School Services at the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mr Zuhairu Usman, who represented the board’s chairman, said the impact of the project was evident in the school’s facilities and learning outcomes.

He described the UBEC Model Smart School as the only smart school in the state, noting that students had embraced digital learning and were gradually moving away from the use of traditional chalkboards.

Usman expressed confidence in the sustainability of the project, citing the Bauchi State Government’s commitment to education, including the declaration of a state of emergency in the sector by Governor Bala Mohammed.

The school’s principal, Mr Tahir Baba Inuwa, said the donations would serve as motivation for both teachers and students, stressing that rewards play a key role in improving morale and performance.

The event featured presentations by students demonstrating their digital skills, highlighting what officials described as significant progress in the integration of technology into public education in Bauchi State.
