Alhaji Jibrin Paiko, has said the training of over 100 adult education facilitators in Abia State is aimed at improving the skills, knowledge and attitude of the facilitators towards community development.
Paiko stated this in Umuahia while flagging-off a six-day training workshop for state facilitators across the country.
He said, “The programme would equip facilitators with skill and knowledge that would enable them function effectively in the society.”
The training programme which was organized by NMEC in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)  was aimed at revitalizing adult and youth literacy in the country.  Paiko in an interview with Daily Trust maintained that the overall objective of the programme is to strengthen national capacity for the delivery of quality literacy programme.
In her address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Abia State, Mrs. Victoria Chigbu, regretted that Nigeria belongs to the nine counties of the world considered most backward in education, harboring 70% of the world’s illiterate adults. According to Chigbu, “Adult literacy is perceived as being central to social, political and economic well being of any society that is why adult literacy campaign tops UNESCO education for all agenda.”
