The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic coupled with issues of insecurity and poor marketing strategies have held back farming activities in some agricultural states in Nigeria leading to a reduction in farmer’s productivity.
In response to these impediments, several agricultural institutions have provided interventions and initiatives to save the situation in most of the affected areas.
In Kano State, farmers in Bagwai Local Government Areas have received farming relief packages from Sasakawa Global 2000 (SG 2000) to cushion the heat of the pandemic on the farmers.
The interventions, which include improved seeds, pesticides, granular fertilizer as well as training on modern farming techniques were provided to the farmers especially the women.
Hajiya Maryam Muhammad Kiyawa is the chairperson of Bagwai Women Farmers Association and according to her, life was very tough for the farmers at the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that most of the farmers had given-up hope in cultivating their farms but with support from the Sasakawa, they were able to go back to the farm to work with ease.
Another member of the association, Malama Binta Musa Bagwai, noted that the training they received from SG2000 had accorded them the privileges of increasing their farm’s production as they have recorded a huge increment in their farm output.
On his part, the Deputy Country Director, SG2000, Dr Abdulhamid Gambo said that his organisation intervened in Kano as well as Gombe State to cushion the heat through linking the farmers with the market and also giving them improved seeds and other farm inputs.
