No fewer than 7,500 students from 50 schools have been targeted for digital coding by the Kwara State government.
The project, under the Kwara Coding and Digital Literacy Programme, is regarded as a trail blazing attempt and one of the largest in the country.
First introduced in 2024 with a pilot phase of 684 students across six schools, the programme has been expanded targeting 7,500 students across 50 public secondary schools in the state.
The government said the “strategic initiative“ is part of the present administration’s broader agenda to position Kwara as a regional hub for innovation, technology, and digital opportunity in alignment with his role as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF).

Following the completion of the Holiday Edition (2nd Term) which ran from Monday, April 7 to Friday, April 25, 2025, the new phase will run seamlessly with the third term academic session starting today (Monday).
Explaining further on the project and targets, Special Assistant to the Governor on Digital Innovations, Hon. Kayode Ishola, said the initiative is beyond teaching young people how to use technology.
“It’s about preparing a future workforce that can lead innovation across Africa and reflects the governor’s bold commitment to digital inclusion, youth empowerment, and sustainable development.
“This initiative runs in parallel with the Ilorin Innovation Hub, recently commissioned by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to support startups, digital creators, and tech entrepreneurs which has been widely praised for its architectural brilliance and potential to catalyze a thriving digital ecosystem”, he noted.
As of April 25, 2025, 5,503 students which represents 73.4% of the target have already been onboarded.
The breakdown of the figures: 1,222 (22.20%), 2,186 (39.70%) and 2,095 (38.10%) student for Kwara North, South and Central with 2,564 male and 2,939 female students representing 46.6% and 53.4% respectively.
The government said the impressive uptake underscores the increasing appeal and relevance of digital education among Kwara’s youth and “reflects the administration’s success in making public schools competitive and desirable in a field traditionally dominated by high-cost private institutions”.
