Aneke, who also got a pair of boots from ‘The Yak’, set a new all-time record of 20 goals this past season while featuring for Kaduna United.

He thus consigned to the history books the 18-goal mark set by Ahmed Musa the previous season.

A 17-goal record set by Ishaya Jatau in the inaugural season of the NPL in 1990 was only matched by Orok Akarandut three seasons ago.

Yakubu was also top scorer in the 1999 season for Julius Berger of Lagos with nine goals and said he wishes to encourage the players in the domestic league.

Aneke made his full international debut against Zambia on Tuesday and has been included in the squad of the Nigeria Olympic team for next week’s final Olympic qualifying tournament in Morocco.

Nigeria is in Group A along with the host country, Algeria and Senegal.
