Speaking to Trustsports, Coach of National Junior tennis team, Ubale Mohammed expressed satisfaction with attendance at the event as he said even as schools are on break for the Easter celebration; the stands have not been in want of spectators.

He explained that as the warm up matches progressed, more spectators continued to turn out in large numbers to cheer up the players.

“I am impressed with what I have seen so far. Even as schools are on holiday, most of the students have been coming out to cheer on the players. The organizers also did well by inviting schools to come and witness the matches”, he said.

The coach said even football does not enjoy so much followership in Abuja and so the fans have surprised him with their support for tennis even as it is a youth championship.

On his part, Nigeria’s number one tennis player, Sunday Emmanuel who is in Abuja to give moral support to the younger players said the attendance of spectators has exceeded his expectations.

According to him, some of the players had cause to complain that they were distracted by too much noise from the fans which to him is enough indication that the championship proper will not lack the necessary support from fans.

“Some of the players have complained that they were distracted by noise from the spectators. This means the attendance is not poor. I lost a match in Egypt because of a little distraction from the fans and I know what these players are talking about” he stated

 The warm up matches of the 33 Africa Junior Tennis Championship ended yesterday and the competition proper will begin today at the Abuja National Stadium.
