Ondo State governor and chairman of Southern Governors Forum, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), has lambasted the federal government for allegedly granting approval to a state-owned security outfit in President Muhammadu Buhari’s homestate, Katsina, while denying the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun) same privilege.

Akeredolu noted that the action of the FG was fraught with great dangers and portended a country with two systems where advantages were conferred on some over others.

The governor referred to a video on social media wherein the security outfit in Katsina was empowered to carry AK-47 to tackle internal security challenges.

The Western Nigeria Security Network codenamed Operation Amotekun was formed in 2020 by the six states of South West to curb insecurity in the region.

The governor said that Ondo state government has decided to acquire arms to protect the state against bandits who have an unchecked access to sophisticated weapons

“We want to reiterate, that what is sauce for the goose, is sauce for the gander. Ondo State government, under the doctrine of necessity, has decided to fulfill its legal, constitutional and moral duty to the citizens of the state, by acquiring arms to protect them.

“This is more so, given that the bandits have an unchecked access to sophisticated weapons. The State government cannot look on while its citizens are being terrorized and murdered with impunity. We will defend our people,” he said.

The spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force, Muyiwa Adejobi, could not be reached for comments as several calls to his mobile phone were rejected.

He had yet to reply to a text message sent to him as of the time of filing this report.
