Amid a challenging run in the ongoing Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) season, Akwa United Football Club has signed coach Kennedy Boboye to a mid-season managerial contract. The agreement was finalized at the club’s office in Uyo, with Boboye set to assume his duties later this week.

The club chairman, Elder Paul Bassey, described Boboye’s return as a necessary move, citing the coach’s track record and previous achievements with the team. Elder Bassey expressed confidence that Boboye’s expertise will spark a turnaround in the team’s performance during the second half of the season.

Boboye first joined the Promise Keepers in the 2019-2020 NPFL season, leading them to a league title in the 2020-2021 season—his second league trophy as a coach, having previously won with Plateau United in 2017.

He also managed Akwa United during their CAF Champions League debut in 2021 before resigning in 2022 following a series of poor results. After brief stints with Heartland FC and Sunshine Stars, Boboye now returns to Akwa United ahead of the second stanza of the 2024-2025 NPFL season.

Meanwhile, Rivers United has reiterated that forward Andy Okpe remains a registered player of the club despite his unapproved absence and ongoing contractual disputes.

In a statement signed by the club’s management, Rivers United emphasized that Okpe is under contract until 2027 and that his obligations to the club remain binding and enforceable. The statement also dismissed any claims of the player’s availability for transfer or engagement with other clubs or agents as unfounded.
