The Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), Prof. Tunji Olaopa, has described the coronation of the 46th Aláàfin of Òyó, Ọba Abímbọlá Akeem Òwóadé, as a monumental milestone in the ongoing renaissance of Yoruba culture and civilization.

In a message issued to commemorate the coronation, which holds today, Prof. Olaopa noted that the installation of a new Aláàfin is an event steeped in profound social, political, and cultural symbolism.

Olaopa acknowledged the weight of history and leadership that the new monarch inherits.

“The new Aláàfin is stepping into very big shoes—not only as the successor to the charismatic and influential leadership of past monarchs, from Aláàfin Atìbà Atóbatélè to the unforgettable Aláàfin Lamidi Adéyẹmí, but also as the custodian of an ancient legacy that stretches back to legendary figures such as Òrànmíyàn and Sàngó.”

“These were visionary leaders whose foresight and selfless service laid the foundations of the formidable Òyó Empire, and whose cultural philosophies gave birth to the revered concept of ọmọlúwàbí, which the Yoruba have proudly offered to the world.”

According to him, this ascension is not a ceremonial event but rather, it carries a modernising imperative crucial to advancing a Yoruba renaissance—both at home and abroad.

He emphasised that in contemporary Nigeria, traditional institutions such as the Aláàfin’s stool play an increasingly vital role in democratic rejuvenation. “It is through the framework of traditional institutions that Nigeria’s local governance becomes both clarified and revitalised,” he noted.

He urged the monarch to embrace this opportunity to redefine traditional leadership.
