Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey campaign ended in shock on Wednesday night as they were eliminated by Segunda Division side Albacete in a dramatic last-16 clash, marking a disappointing start to life under new head coach Álvaro Arbeloa.

Albacete struck first in the 42nd minute when defender Javi Villar rose highest to head José Lazo’s corner past goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, despite Madrid dominating possession and territory in the early stages. The La Liga giants, who enjoyed close to 80 per cent possession and registered five attempts before conceding, were left stunned by the setback.

Madrid responded swiftly and levelled the score in first-half stoppage time. Teenager Franco Mastantuono capitalised on a mistake by Albacete goalkeeper Raúl Lizoain, tapping in from close range to restore parity and send the teams into the break level.

Substitute Jefte Betancor emerged as the hero for the hosts, scoring twice in the final eight minutes to swing the tie decisively in their favour. His goals came either side of a brief Madrid equaliser from Gonzalo García, extinguishing any hopes of a late comeback.

The result sealed Albacete’s first-ever victory over the 15-time Champions League winners and booked their place in the quarter-finals in memorable fashion.
