World number two tennis player Carlos Alcaraz will miss the French Open Grand Slam tournament due to injury.

According to his post on his X handle, the Spanish star said he will also miss the Rome Masters in addition to his unavailability for the second Grand Slam of the tennis calendar after suffering a wrist injury on his right hand during his Barcelona Open first round match against Otto Virtanen.

The 22-year-old said he felt his wrist “give way” while retuning a shot during the encounter, and he received side court following a medical time-out in the first set with the score 5-4 in his favour.

He went on to win the match 6–4, 6–2 with his hand heavily bandaged, but revealed the pain worsened afterwards.

He withdrew from the tournament and went for tests that revealed he will miss both tournaments. A sad Alcaraz, winner of the last two French Open titles, said his team decided to take the cautious route and not participate in the two tournaments.

He also revealed that there is not set return date, but that he wil bounce back stronger.

“After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing is to be cautious and not participate in Rome and Roland Garros, while we wait to assess the evolution to decide when we will return to the court.

“It’s a complicated moment for me, but I’m sure we’ll come out stronger from here.”

Alcaraz also earlier withdrew from the Madrid Open and was seen in a splint at the Laureus World Sports Award.

The youngest man to win seven major titles in the Open era, Alcaraz won the Australian Open in February to complete a career Grand Slam, breaking countryman Rafael Nadal’s record to become the youngest winner at 22 years.
