Head of the army in Algeria said the military will not allow a breakdown of security or a return to the turbulence of the 1990s that saw 200,000 people killed.

General Ahmed Gaid Salah was speaking as thousands of people again demonstrated in the country’s main cities demanding that President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, 82, step down.

In the capital, Algiers, protesters are demanding that Bouteflika, who’s sick, abandon plans to seek a fifth term in next month’s election.
