Okafor said he regretted that Enugu East senatorial district currently being represented by Senator Gilbert Nnaji has over the years been neglected in terms of developing its agriculture.
Addressing a crowd that attended the declaration at the Zanzibar Centre, Independence Layout, Enugu, he said, if elected into the Senate, he would make agriculture development of his senatorial zone the main focus of his representation since the sector was badly neglected by past politicians who represented the zone.
“Our past senators did not look into the area of developing agriculture by keying into the federal government good agricultural programmes nor did they look into the area of using coal to enhance power supply in the area, nor did they consider developing agriculture of our people,” Okafor said.
“Agriculture is going to be our main thrust in the Senate if I’m eventually elected into the Senate to represent our people. Nkanu people, Ogboka, Nome people are all agriculture people. The federal government has a lot of programmes on agriculture but we have not had good representation; our people have not been able to key into the programme. Our people have not been benefiting from the fertiliser subsidy from the federal government,” he told the gathering.
He said if elected, he would work with the federal government’s agriculture initiatives to pursue the cassava bread initiative of the government since both Nike and Nkanu are blessed with abundant cassava.
