The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has announced plans to support the current administration’s efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural revolution across the country’s 774 local government areas.

The President of ALGON, Engr. Bello Lawal disclosed this at the association’s quarterly National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja.

He said ALGON was exploring ways to directly support farmers at the grassroots in order to boost food production nationwide.

“We are looking at how to support Nigerian farmers at the local government level and how to increase production through mechanised farming and access to affordable farming inputs. This will help drive down food production costs and ensure farmers get better value for their produce,” Lawal said.

He emphasised that Nigeria operates a federal system in which all tiers of government have defined responsibilities, noting that local governments occupy a central position in driving agricultural development.
