The deputy governor recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. It was also reported that the deputy governor, Musa Ibeto, was recently ordered out of the state executive council meeting by the governor.
The directive for the speaker to act in his absence was contained in a letter signed by the governor and forwarded to the state assembly.
The letter which was made available to Daily Trust reads in part: “I wish to inform Mr. Speaker, that I intend to travel to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to perform the Lesser Hajj between February 19th-26th. In my absence, the Speaker, Niger State House of Assembly, Adamu Usman, will oversee my schedules as the acting governor.”
On why the deputy governor was not directed to oversee the affairs of the state in the governor’s absence, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Aliyu, Mr. Isreal Ebije, said there was nothing wrong with the development.
He maintained that the governor has prerogative to ask the deputy governor, Secretary to the State government or the Speaker to act in his absence.
