A meeting of commissioners of environment from the participating 11 northern frontline states supervised by the acting Minister of Environment, Mr Darius D. Ishaku, agreed that the participating states should commence the training of forest guards to protect trees.
At the meeting, it was announced that an additional N3 billion was approved for the project by the federal government.
Ishaku called for total commitment and dedication from the commissioners, saying that involving the forest guards would open up job opportunities in the participating communities.
He urged the frontline states to make their contributions towards the success of the programme.
Also speaking, Mr Taiye Haruna, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Environment, noted that the Great Green Wall project was to tackle the problem of the Sahel and Saharan regions in the nation.
He said that preparations were on for the drilling of boreholes in all the participating communities.
