The university’s foundation was laid in 2006 and commissioned in 2009; it is barely 9-years old today. But within this short period the university had fully taken-off as one of the best centres of learning in northern Nigeria. Numerous positive transformations have been witnessed in the university as a result of capable hands that steer its affairs based on the support from the previous administrations.
But, recently the reputation of this institution has come under attack as a result of permutation and ostensibly leadership tussle which should have been averted if due process was followed and dime was given to whom deserve it. Merit supposes to be a driving force that guides any academic appointment as it used to be in Umaru Musa Yaradua University, so long as we wish the University well.
Your Excellency, it is based on this premise that Funtua Consultative Forum wish to draw your attention on the unfortunate but advertent academic brouhaha that intruded into the university community of UMYU. The matter has already taken a new dimension with the aggrieved party contesting the issue before a court of law, only after you have been sworn-in as the Executive Governor of Katsina State.
Sir, we have reason to believe that the unfortunate crisis was ignited by some undesirable elements that do not wish your administration well and are trying to tarnish your good image. This is obvious as they openly refused to respect the recommendation of the interview panel for the post of Vice Chancellor as approved by the former Governor who appointed Professor Idris Isa Funtua after due diligence of the three names presented to him as announced by the former S. A. Media to the governor on 13th May, 2015.
Your Excellency, information available to us indicates that Professor Idris Isa Funtua came first in the interview, while Professor Ibrahim Malumfashi came second and Professor Mansur Malumfashi came third among the candidates that vied for the post which was preceded by a screening exercise, conducted by highly principled and respected individuals drawn from various Universities across the country with representatives from Umaru Musa Yaradua university and department of Higher Education.
Sir, our Forum is deeply concerned that nobody raised an eyebrow when the then Governor made the announcement of the appointment of Professor Funtua as the new VC. And a letter to that effect was supposed to have been written by the University Register but instead, the Registrar took a leave and only to resume duty after you have been sworn-in. He was even blatant to have said that the Governor has no power to appoint Vice Chancellor in the State University. This argument was further adopted by Professor Mansur who became third at the selection interview to challenge the appointment of Professor Funtua before Katsina State High Court, (on the basis that the power of appointing VC lies with the Governing Council).
In line with this, we, the people of Funtua Local Government are living in harmony with all our brethren in the 11 Local Governments of Funtua Senatorial Zone and the state in general, but the Registrar, who is from the same local government with Prof. Mansur is set on causing disaffection, hatred and disharmony among the people of the zone using a bygone issue.
Therefore, Funtua Consultative Forum, a non-partisan and non-governmental organization wish to make it categorically clear that it will abide by any lawful decision that follows due process and which do not promote ill-will, hatred, disaffection or ridicule other people or one that is directed at truncating justice, fairness and equity.
