Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Shehu Ilu Barde, has arrived in Accra to officially assume duty as the country’s envoy to the West African nation.

The career diplomat arrived on June 18 and was received by members of the Nigerian High Commission, the defence section, the trade commission, as well as members of the Nigerian community in Ghana.

Ambassador Barde is among the ambassadors appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in March this year and subsequently deployed to various diplomatic missions across the world.

A seasoned foreign service officer, Barde joined Nigeria’s foreign service in 1995 and had served in Nigeria’s diplomatic missions in Burkina Faso, the United States, Ethiopia and France. He was appointed Ambassador-in-Situ in 2022 and received a Presidential Commendation in 2023.

The new high commissioner is expected to strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Ghana and promote cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Born in Katsina State in 1967, Barde holds a degree in Sociology from Bayero University, Kano, and has undergone professional training at the Nigerian Foreign Service Academy, Lagos, alongside several diplomatic and management courses within and outside Nigeria.

He also participated in numerous bilateral and multilateral engagements, including African Union and United Nations meetings, during his over three decades in public service.
